How to compare two home-service quotes

The lowest number only helps when the scope, provider, and exclusions match.

Compare the same work

Check quantities, materials, method, access, and excluded tasks. A short low quote can omit work included in a more complete one.

Know who is doing the work

Ask for the contracting business name, relevant qualifications, insurance, and who will attend. A directory listing or certificate is not a substitute for current verification.

Understand changes

Ask how additional work is approved. Avoid open-ended verbal changes: confirm scope and price before the extra work begins.

Clarify completion and payment

Agree on completion criteria, payment timing, and how a concern is raised. For regulated work, applicable contract and deposit rules must be followed.

General planning guidance. Product instructions and a qualified provider’s assessment should guide the work at your property.
